Nikon Announces Three New Coolpix Cameras

Today, Nikon released information about three new Coolpix cameras that are being released later in the year; the S80, S8100 and the P7000. The S80 is a new touch screen camera that sports a 0.7″ thin body and redesigned look over the earlier S70. The S80 will be launching in Fall 2010 in six colors for a price of $329.95. New  models offer a mobile shooting quality and image rendering  higher to that reserved for digital cameras. The rivalry between cell phones and cameras manufacturers takes  a step further. After Sony Ericsson was  launching in October 2008 a “camera phone” with a photo sensor of 8.1 million pixels (megapixels). The best facilities in  its kind so far peaked at 5 megapixels, like the Nokia N95 or the Motorola MOTOZINE Z5.

The  C905 from Sony Ericsson therefore considered good quality prints in an A3 format . It is the first of its kind to be distributed widely, including in Africa.
With a real xenon flash, autofocus and a large screen scratch, the cell phone also offered an image stabilizer, face detection and red eye reduction. A camera phone is typically equipped with a GPS receiver that can automatically locate where the photo was taken. It can also send photos directly to web sites via a WiFi connection .

On the other hand , a camera phone still lacks an optical zoom, like the Sony Ericsson C905, which has only  a 16x digital zoom, despite its size (136 g) and 2 cm thick. In these circumstances, the number of pixels is not always a guarantee of quality. In addition, the battery of the phone (three to four hours on average) is too low to consider a report for example .

In fact, a recent survey by InfoTrends revealed that 30% of the users of digital cameras and cell phones believe that their phone will probably be their main camera for taking pictures in the coming years. With the iPhone 4 , which allows to shoot HD video and other phones with the resolutions  over 12 megapixels , it is normal that the camera makers are worried. One of their biggest problem is probably that more and more people want to automatically download photos on their favorite social networks … and that phone companies are moving more aggressively to promote it (although some cameras have the same option ).From my side I think I can easily replace my camera with my phone, but I'm not a very good photographer … How about  you?

But when Representative John M. Spratt Jr., a Democrat from South Carolina first elected in 1982, agreed to debate Mick Mulvaney, his Republican opponent, on Tuesday night, it was on the condition that no television cameras be allowed to record the event.

The only “viewers” were those who attended the face-off in person, at a South Carolina Lion’s Club. Reporters were allowed in with pens and notebooks, and they could post updates via Twitter, but they could not record any audio or video.

Campaign officials could not be reached for comment, but they told The Charlotte Observer that they were worried that Mr. Spratt’s words would be twisted and taken out of context. They pointed to the example of Shirley Sherrod, a United States Agriculture Department official, who was criticized and later fired from her job after a conservative blogger posted a video clip in which she appeared, in remarks taken out of context, to admit having discriminated against a white farmer.

Radio and Television Business Report, a Web site that watches the broadcasting industry, noted that Mr. Spratt’s concern was an unusual one in this day and age, saying, “he will have to go into hiding if that’s what he hopes to prevent — he will have a very hard time getting out of camera range when every citizen is a potential electronic journalist and campaigns assign staff to tail one another.”

Along those lines, readers of various Web sites urged the 220 people who paid to get into the debate to take along discreet recording devices, like this one, to keep the candidates accountable.

These clips repeatedly show the atrocities on innocent Kashmiri people by Indian brutality forces. These can also be viewed on various other social network websites. It has greatly challenged India media, which always portray only the good side of their police forces (one wonders if they ever had a good side in Kashmir). Gone are the days when such sufferings were kept hidden from the international and national audience by the covert India media and their political masses.

The Kashmiri independent electronic media has made our freedom struggle much more vibrant and lucid to the rest of the world. These video clips and images depict the real Indian forces and their extremely atrocious behavior. They are not only killing innocent people but also destroying properly when ironically no one was on the roads to offer resistant to them, as curfew was strictly imposed. It is awfully degrading action from police forces in uniform. Alas! they have completely lost the credibility to be called security forces, they are truly a brutality regime, and should be honestly renamed. As security means to secure people, I wonder how secure our innocent people of Kashmir are under their nasty and masked administration. In one video young men are striped completely naked in public and were forced to walk in front of women without covering their private parts. This reminds one the Guantánamo Bay detention centre of Americans. The difference remains that in Kashmir, the prison is much larger in scale as it covers the whole of Jammu and Kashmir.

One must appreciate and congratulate the sincere and brave efforts of those people who under extremely dangerous circumstances are recording the appalling actions from these forces in uniform. Such vital evidences cannot be ignored by Indian or international community and can act as a strong tool to open those eyes which were kept blind of realities by the bulk of the Indian media and government agencies. Now, the time has reached where world community has to understand the evil faces of world’s largest democracy.

Had these cameras and other electronic equipments arrived earlier in Kashmir and in such large numbers, the protests would have been changed to new heights. It is better to be late than never and such easily available equipments would surely help us achieve what we are demanding from decades of our struggle.

One really wonders how Indian media and their government will defend the actions of their so called “dear” forces. Obviously, they have little choice now, as electronic media and the uploading of such images /videos are growing with time and it is literally impossible for them to stop individual efforts in making this happen.

India should realize that they are fighting with a nation not with a group. Using the tactics of Punjab is never going to work in Kashmir. As there movement was not supported by the people, therefore, Indian forces were successful in controlling them.  The recent uprooting of Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka should not be used as a motivation to stop valley uprising, as there too, it was just a group NOT a nation at war.

It needs a sincere effort from all kinds of people to understand the real plight of innocent Kashmiri and their legitimate demands. By watching these clips one must understand why India is fighting a full-fledged war with these people who have nothing except stones in their hands. It could be either craziness or arrogance!

Plano could soon become one of the nation's first cities to equip police with laser speed guns that also capture video.

Police say the handheld equipment would provide courts with indisputable evidence that speeders would find difficult to contest.

In a broader sense, the technology could open up new ways for patrols to crack down on road infractions that are harder to document, such as aggressive driving and tailgating.

But the proposal, still far from finalized, is already spawning questions. City officials have asked Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott to clarify whether the video equipment would run afoul of a state law that prohibits cities from using automated cameras to catch speeders.

The camera guns, which cost as much as $6,000 apiece, are nearly three times the cost of the laser guns that police currently use. Moreover, Plano's proposal comes as other kinds of traffic cameras, such as those meant to catch red-light runners, have met a backlash.

Authorities in Plano tried to make a clear distinction between the video-equipped guns they are considering and the automated traffic cameras that have drawn criticism.

The proposed camera guns are not automated, but operated by police in the field. As such, their purpose is not to replace patrols or catch more speeders, but to give police the chance to collect irrefutable evidence of traffic violations that unfold in front of them.

"Many times when we stop someone, the citizen doesn't think that they committed a violation," Plano Police Chief Greg Rushin said. "This will help us with the evidence."

Of the more than 16,000 speeding citations issued in Plano in the current fiscal year, 79 have been contested, court statistics show.

Few adopters

Few, if any, Texas cities are believed to have adopted the video-equipped guns. Colorado-based Laser Technology Inc., one of the only vendors to sell the equipment, introduced its version this year. In addition to video, the laser guns also snap a high-resolution photo of the vehicle as it approaches.

Paul Adkins, marketing and communications coordinator for Laser Technology, estimated that about a dozen communities nationwide had adopted the company's camera guns. He could not provide a list of those cities.

A law enforcement agency in Colorado, the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office, has tested one of the camera guns for some months now, Lt. Michael Madziarek said.

He said the video function provides "one extra visual" aid to help authorities catch speeders. Yet he said the technology is not a replacement for police judgment.

"It puts more of a picture to the whole story. We're moving into a video-type age where almost everything is on video now," Madziarek said. "But it's still up to the officer to determine whether there was a violation."

Video is, indeed, becoming more central to law enforcement. Cameras in patrol cars have become commonplace. Beyond that, communities in some 23 states have installed red-light cameras. Twelve states permit automated speed cameras.

Video's growing popularity, however, has led to charges that traffic cameras of any kind invade privacy and are installed primarily to generate revenue.

Opponents have directed most of the criticism at red-light cameras. In Texas alone, cities have collected more than $103 million since the state's revised red-light camera law took effect in 2007.

Authorities are sensitive to the notion that the camera-equipped guns could face similar public scrutiny. As the technology develops, Rushin said, he could foresee a day when Plano police use handheld video cameras to help pull over aggressive drivers.

Plano police have requested $89,000 to purchase 16 video-equipped speed guns, according to a preliminary proposal. The money would likely come from extra monies generated by Plano's red-light camera efforts, Rushin said.

The request still requires approval from the city manager's office and Plano's City Council.

Legal question

State Rep. Vicki Truitt, R-Keller, last month sent a letter to Abbott on Plano's behalf to clarify whether the camera guns would violate state law.

Truitt helped pass the 2007 law prohibiting cities from using automated speed cameras. But she said she did not intend the law to interfere with other technologies, such as the video-equipped speed guns.

Abbott typically does not comment on rulings or opinions before they are published. A spokesman for his office declined to comment. A ruling is expected sometime early next year.

You're walking downtown when you notice an altercation. Two police officers are making an arrest and a brief struggle takes place. The prisoner is quickly subdued, but the officers don't let up.

So you get out a cellphone camera and begin snapping pictures. Immediately, one of the policemen approaches and demands the camera. You refuse and the officer arrests you for obstructing him in the conduct of his duty.

Of course, this is a hypothetical scenario. In real life, such a confrontation shouldn't occur. There is no law in Canada against photographing a police officer.

Yet such events do happen, more often than we realize. A TV cameraman was detained after he filmed a police shooting at a Vancouver gas station. Officers in Winnipeg handcuffed a man who photographed them tasering a suspect. And in June, two National Post photographers were arrested and taken into custody during the G20 protests in Toronto.

While some of these detentions occurred in confused situations, they are part of a broader trend. In a number of western countries, it might soon be illegal to photograph police.

Britain has already introduced legislation to that effect. The stated purpose is to prevent terrorists gaining information about government counter-measures. But civil liberties groups complain the law is worded so vaguely that just about any police action is off limits.

And law enforcement agencies in the U.S. are moving in the same direction. There are frequent reports of American police reacting forcibly to being photographed.

There are circumstances where cameras don't belong. If lives are put in danger or undercover officers' identities revealed or the privacy of victims is invaded, a ban is clearly in order.

But those don't appear to be the main reasons for this trend. More probably, law enforcement officials simply don't like being caught on film.

That's hardly surprising. Most of us are uncomfortable with anything that feels like snooping.

Yet police officers occupy a special position. Most of their work is done in the public arena. They carry guns and employ force. That seems to warrant an extra level of oversight.

And it does appear that oversight is needed. From the Robert Dziekanski Taser incident at Vancouver International Airport to the infamous Rodney King beating in Los Angeles, amateur photographers have recorded a wide range of troubling incidents.

It's also worth noting that most law enforcement agencies support greater use of surveillance cameras in public places. Surely this is a two-way street. If law-abiding people are to be videotaped going about their business, the police should expect no less.

There is another aspect to this issue. At the G20 protests in Toronto and anti-Olympic demonstrations in Vancouver, many activists wore masks. This has become a routine practice.

Political rallies play an important role in any democracy. They must be protected.

Yet the protester who dons a mask is no less a threat to civic order than the police officer who confiscates a camera. Both want anonymity in situations that require some level of accountability.

Of course most protest marchers are sincere and trustworthy, just as most officers are. Still, the potential for abuse is real.

It's understandable that law enforcement officers don't like being photographed. Their job is tough enough already.

However it would send entirely the wrong message to ban this useful form of oversight. With public space so crowded and stress-filled, such checks and balances are needed, however irritating they might be.

a short video showing the small solar water heater i designed a couple of days ago. it consists of 136 feet of 1/2″ black tubing. internal diameter is actually 3/5″ (cost approx .00), 4 connector pieces (to connect the various pieces together and to connect it to the house (cost approx. .00)), and finally the ‘y connector’ so i could have the garden hose hooked up at the same time (cost approx .00). all purchased from home depot. total cost was approx. .00. all i did was coil 100 feet of the hose and attach it to a piece of plywood. after 30 minutes of sun the water temperature is about 130-133 degrees and after 60 to 90 minutes it can reach 150 degrees. the tubing can hold about 2 gallons of water at a time. if you drain and refill several times throughout the day you could easity get 10-15 gallons of hot water a day. of note: they call the tubing 1/2″ but the actual internal diameter of the tubing is 3/5″ (.6 inches). 100 feet of tubing holds 1.47 gallons and 136 feet of tubing holds approx. 2 gallons. home depot sells a 500 foot roll for about .00. that would hold 7.36 gallons of water.

A few of us loaded up our sleds and headed up to Rogers Lake NB for a day of adventure and good times. Doodle was, as always, frying up a great mess of fish which people were arriving for in large groups. The snow was perfect and our machines were in top-notch shape. As we made our way up the mountain, the scene changed into a winter wonderland. There had been an ice storm followed by heavy snow then light snow (about 50 cm in all). It couldn’t have been better! The day was filled with vistas looking through snow covered valleys and mountains. Snowmobilers and adventurers from all over the Miratimes were making the most of the day. We made our way through to Popple Depot where Mark was busy serving hundreds of cheerful sports who were arriving on all makes and vintages of snowmobiles. The temp was a nice -10°C for most of the day. It was hard to go home as darkness was falling. There are lots more adventures out there this winter!

I have a Mondeo 2ltr TDCi estate (54 plate). I am getting a REALLY irritating noise coming from the heater/aircon unit. When it is on (all temps and speeds), there is a high pitched 'warble' noise eminating from the unit. The pitch increases and decreases when I accelerate or brake. The only way to silence it is to turn the unit off.
It's one of those noises like a dripping tap in the middle of the night. I drive a lot of miles and it's driving me NUTS!!!
